Developing My Skills on Maya - Hands and Faces

This will be the last post in this blog that is about developing my Skills on Maya. I will now be starting on creating a Character Design and a Layout to be shown in my show reel.

Before I go in to our own work I have been working on how to Model a hand and a basic human face.

Hands:
Hands are quite hard to do, but  really enjoyed modeling this hand. My aim was to make it as realistic as possible by adding the nails and the knuckles.

Basic Face:
This is a basic face that we had to model. Still need some work around the eyes.

my next blog will be my research and some ruff sketches about what I will be doing for my show reel. Thanks for reading :)

Developing My Skills on Maya - Creating the Character

Here is a few screen shots of my character that I did in maya. This was to help us develop our skills and show us how we create characters in Maya.

This character was quite hard to do, in the drawing (which is shown below) he has not got a neck and this made it a little difficult to model.
I also found the hair very difficult to do, it was hard trying to shape it around his head.

I will be uploading more screen shots soon of my progress soon.

Developing My Skills on Maya

In my last blog I explained that I needed to develop my skills on Maya for my show-reel and future job. I wonted to show you what character I will be trying to create in Maya. This was NOT drawn by me, this was drawn by one of my teachers at my University. This will only be used to help me develop my skills in Maya and NOT for any other reason.
This character will not be shown in my show-reel.

This character is drawn in three different views, Front, perspective and side. I will import the front and side image in to Maya and the perspective will be a reference. I will line up the front and side so they match and then Ill start working on the body first.

This is how I will set the images in Maya. Now Ill have to start modeling.

In my next blog I will show you how the character turns out and Ill tell you how I did it.

Proposal

This year I will be creating a Show-reel that I can use as part of my CV in the future. I need to think about what job i would like to do so that my show this in my show-reel. I would love to get in to the games industry and I enjoy, modeling, texturing, character design and layouts. I need to show this in the show-reel!

Since I have done a show-reel before when I took Media for 2 years at chesterfield college I know ruffly what a show-reel consists of.

How long should the show-reel be?

This show-reel shouldn't really be any longer than 4 minutes long. When companies look at your show reel they will skip through it, so showing a full short film would be no good as they wouldn't be paying much attention to the film. Save your minutes and show clips that will impress them.
I need to show what i can do in under a minute so may clips of a short, drawings and maybe showing off some models.

What is need in a show-reel?

An introduction at the start of a show-reel would be good. For example your name and your contact information like a phone number and an email address.

What my plan is for a show-reel

Since I wont to do modeling an texturing as a job i will need to show my skills in this area. So my plan was to first show some character designs done in photo shop and then show the 3D model all done in maya. This will show my skills in modeling and photo shop. I would then do that with my environment modeling. When it comes to my maya i would have a pan around the model so they can have a 360 view.
I need to have good experience in Maya, Photo shop and at least z brush

Where do i start to make this show-reel

First I need to develop my skills in character design before I start creating my own character. This is really important and thousands of people can do modeling and i need to be the one that stands out!

After I have learnt how to do character modeling i will Then do my character design and Layout design in photoshop. I should try do a few drawings so i can pick the best drawings for my show-reel and ill model the best one.

After the drawings are done i will model in maya and then texture them so they look good for my show-reel.

I will then edit all my work together in final cut pro and then have a finished show-reel ready show people.

In my next blog I will show you my progress. Ill be learning how to model a characters head, hands, ears and the body.
